Performance of Bekarang: A Visual Documentation of the Tradition in Muaro Jambi

Through movement, smoke, and ritual gestures, this series interprets Bekarang not merely as a harvest, but as a living cultural system where community and nature converge in the receding floodplains.

Operational Mechanics in the Performance of Bekarang

The practice relies on communal cooperation and specific tools, including the serkap, jalo, and tangkul. This artistic endeavor isolates these implements to examine their function within the social and economic structure of the harvest.

Environmental Adaptation

Movements during the ritual are dictated by water depth and floodplain topography. Through this visual reconstruction, the project records the physical adaptation required by the community to navigate and utilize the seasonal environment.

Ultimately, Bekarang functions as a form of local wisdom in managing river and lake ecosystems. This documentation aims to record the persistence of these traditional methods as a sustainable approach to resource management in Muaro Jambi.
